Bernie Sanders

  • Endorsed
  • Senate, vermont

Staunch progressive Bernie Sanders has represented Vermont in the House and then the Senate since 1991.

Consistently ranked as one of the most popular Senators by voters across party lines, Sanders has made a name for himself as a champion for the working class, an enemy of Wall Street, and a leader in advancing bold, universal policies to address inequality. He has run for president twice, and was runner up for the Democratic nomination in both 2016 and 2020.

Sanders, who is Jewish, got his start in politics through youth activism in the civil rights and anti-war movements. Having lived at the Shaar Ha’amakim kibbutz near Haifa in the 1960s, he has a personal connection to Israel. He has been a consistent champion for equality, democratic freedoms, human rights, international law and diplomacy-first leadership.

Senator Sanders is a longtime J Street ally in Congress.

He has been a strong, consistent supporter of US security aid to Israel as well as increased oversight to ensure it is only used for legitimate security purposes.

Sanders has been outspoken against Prime Minister Netanyahu, violations of international law, the settlement-movement and the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza. He is a regular guest at J Street’s national conferences.

Senator Sanders serves as the Chair of the Budget Committee and sits on the Committee on Environment and Public Works, Energy and Natural Resources, and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.
